Italian Turkey “Sausage” Burgers!

Italian Turkey “Sausage” Burgers!

Y’all I am obsessed with turkey burgers. They are one of the most versatile foods… like meatballs. Who doesn’t love meatballs?! I digress…

This week, I prepped a bunch of these burgers, and they taste a lot like Italian sausage with WAY less fat and ALL DA FLAVA. All it takes is a few tweaks to make something extra delicious without all of the added calories. Instead of using actual turkey sausage (which despite the fact that it is poultry, packs on the fat), I used a combination of herbs and spices, and a mixture of ground turkey and ground turkey breast.

This recipes makes 8 delicious 4 oz patties. The macros for each patty will only set you back 3.5g carbs, 5g fat, and a whopping 26g of protein! I nabbed this recipe from Dward Cooks and tweaked it a tad to fit my needs.

Here is the recipe for Italian Turkey “Sausage” Burgers:

  • 1 lb ground turkey breast
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup Italian Seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Salt to taste

The directions for this one are simple as can be… First, heat up your grill! Then, combine all ingredients first with a wooden spoon, then combine using wet hands to make sure the meat, breadcrumbs, egg, herbs and spices are well combined. Portion out ~4 oz of the mixture and form into patties, pressing in the middle so that the patties cook evenly on the grill. Place onto your hot grill and flip once – keep ’em on there until they’re cooked through.

Macros: 3.5g carbs, 5g fat, 26g protein. Makes 8 ~4oz patties.

I finished mine off with a slice of American cheese and fresh spinach leaves, and sandwiched it in a “light” hamburger bun. You can’t do this burger wrong if you leave it plain, but the opportunities are endless:

  • Top with tomato sauce and Parmesan or mozzarella and finish under the broiler for a turkey “sausage” burger parm!
  • Add over arugula, roasted red peppers, and burrata for a delicious take on a salad!
  • Top with Cabot Extra Light Cheddar cheese and G. Hughes BBQ sauce for a different twist!
  • Over spaghetti squash with cooked spinach and kale, topped with fat free mozzarella!

Give these burgers a try on your next meal prep day and let me know how much you enjoyed them!

Loved pairing this with fresh spinach. Would be smashing with a garlic aioli, if you’re feeling fancy.
Pairing the ground turkey meat in with the ground turkey breast keeps these delicious burgers from getting dry when cooking!
